World-class food photography right here in the Midwest
I am obsessed with the beauty of food photography. Studying, practicing, and perfecting the art and technology required to create seductive food and drink photos for twenty years, I’ve learned how to focus the viewer’s attention on colors and textures, emphasizing the flavor of the food. My goal is always for the viewer to crave the food they see in my images. I want them to taste the food with their eyes.

Food photography immersed in creativity and technical knowledge
As an experienced food photographer, my creative powers and vast knowledge of lighting and equipment, allow me to tailor your images to fit your style.
Do you need your new images to match the style of existing photos for branding reasons? Perhaps you want me to replicate the style of food photos you’ve seen online or in a magazine. I have you covered. I am a student of how light falls and reflects on food and how lenses can be used to guide the eye through the photo causing it to find just the right resting place. My expertise in seeing how another food photographer produced their image is outstanding.
Together, we will consider the aesthetic of your brand or the ambiance of your restaurant in stylistic choice. Both the environment and the menu will guide, to a greater or lesser degree, the photographic style. Consider these two examples: A quiet, dark and intimate dinner restaurant serving New York Steak, Béarnaise will likely require solidly different strategies than a bright and cheery lunch spot with an ocean of window light which serves a Lemon-glazed Salmon Salad.
Photographer Brian Barkley creates appetizing images of food
There are few types of imagery as captivating as food photography. Food brings out our inner animal. Light, texture, color, form, and framing, all converge to create an artistic attraction and carnal desire. I approach every dish with this in mind, sculpting with light, experimenting with prop placement, and gently tweaking the dish presented. Stalking my prey, camera in hand, as a food photographer, I am ultimately concerned with generating an emotional response from the viewer and my client’s satisfaction and success.
Based in the Iowa – Illinois Quad Cities area and capturing images throughout the Midwest
I typically work in restaurants from Chicago to Des Moines. My office is in the Quad Cities, and I travel wherever needed. Though not a food stylist, I drive the creative process working with chefs (and stylists if hired) to make the most of any dish I photograph. A calm and capable demeanor keeps things moving seamlessly and efficiently on set with a fun, and professional vibe.
Anyone present at the shoot may immediately view and critique images which are wirelessly transmitted to an iPad. This excellent tool allows for solid decisions on presentation, lighting, props, crop, and other vital factors. Rest assured, you will be satisfied with the results.
I am devoted to my art form and my client’s success. Allow me to serve you by photographing the food that you serve to others.
